DISCARDING DISTRACTION

The human mind is capable of logic and analysis but applying these is a choice which must be adhered to with effort. It is unnerving to observe the ease with which almost anyone has areas in which they might delude themselves into giving credibility to the least supportable assertions or shamelessly discountable lies, when delivered with sufficient "show" of conviction by a charismatic person or, similarly, attributed to timeworn texts of murky origin. This kind of unexamined, reverential loyalty is nearly impossible to displace from without as it is not founded on facts and, therefore, is impervious to evidence of its own inconsistency with facts. Moreover, these “beliefs” can be strong enough to spark anger or violence when challenged.
